There are some people, that when life gets tough they rally, when you are having a bad day you can rant with abandon; you all share a little bit of dark humour that sees you through what seems the most ludicrous of days, they know your children and can step in when you are up against it and you enjoy a tipple or two - these are the lockdown ladies in the town that I live, and they have enabled me to navigate this terrain. It started with our usual messenger thread, then zoom took hold, we even held a zoom dinner party where one person cooked and delivered so we could eat out together, so when the time came we could all eat out together, we locked that down as well! We all in one way or another deserved this treat, from being furloughed to home schooling to juggling work and caring for parents, we all deserved this little slice of time in the wonderful foodie haven that is the Woodspeen.
The Woodspeen is a little bit special because the service is outstanding, you can view the chefs at work and there is an extensive wine list to support the menu of seasonal produce that is home grown. The dining area is relaxed and unfussy with a lovely terrace overlooking the West Berkshire countryside. This Michelin star restaurant also has a cookery school where you can book various classes to improve your culinary repertoire.
We started lunch with champagne in the lounge before entering the dining area. For lunch I the following from the very reasonable set lunch menu and it was utterly delicious:
Ham Hock Terrine with Woodspeen Piccalilli and Sourdough Crackers
Pan Fried Sea Bream, Lemon and Herb Couscous with Spicy Tomatoes
Chocolate and Peanut Parfait with Salted Caramel Souce
This was followed up with an Espresso Martini on the Terrace, with some wonderful chat with some wonderful women. An excellent way to spend an afternoon.
