New Year in Bridport

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

Twice we have done this once for my husbands sisters 30th and again for my other sister-in-laws 40th, and there is something cathartic about going to the seaside in Winter, that seems fitting for new year, blowing out the old and welcoming in the new.

We were staying at a stables in Whitchurch Canonincorum which was a central place to visit Bridport and surrounding areas. No visit to this area is complete without a trip to West Bay, those golden cliffs that absorbs the sunshine are a wonder to behold, and there is a lovely walk along the top of these, to help build up an appetite before having a nice lunch at the wonderful Watch House Cafe. There is also a lovely courtyard of shops and the Customs House Vintage Emporium where we got a nice haul of vinyl records. The kids loved the ice cream shop that does a choc chip ice cream with ammonites in it.

The second day we took a trip to Charmouth for a fossil hunting expedition which is a firm family favourite Purbeck Coast pastime. We bough our fossil hammer and went hunting for those grey stones that gave some sign that they may house some ammonites. We were really lucky that we found one, which will go into our fossil display back home.

Whenever we visit Bridport we visit the Ropemakers pub, for some great home-cooked pub grub, the pub is well known for its live music and excellent local ales.
